Bache-Gabrielsen VS Tre Kors: A Century of Legend in Every Glass

The cognac with a story as bold as its character.

Behind the name Tre Kors Norwegian for "Three Crosses" lies one of the most remarkable tales in the history of cognac. During the Norwegian Prohibition era (1916–1926), when distilled spirits were banned from free sale, the young and resourceful Thomas Bache-Gabrielsen made a masterstroke: he replaced the traditional three stars on his VS label with three crosses, the universal symbol of medicine. The move was ingenious cognac could still be sold in pharmacies for medicinal purposes, and Tre Kors quickly became the most prescribed "remedy" in Norway.

Over a century later, the legend lives on. Today, Bache-Gabrielsen VS Tre Kors remains a best-seller in Norway, and its reputation has long crossed Scandinavian borders to reach enthusiasts worldwide.

Craftsmanship in the Glass

This VS is a carefully assembled blend of 75% Fins Bois eaux-de-vie and 25% selected from both Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, aged for an average of 4 years in Limousin oak casks, under the watchful eye of Cellar Master Jean-Philippe Bergier. This blend is the successful marriage of powerful young eaux-de-vie with a more mature cognac, bottled at 40% ABV from 100% Ugni Blanc grapes.

The result is a cognac that effortlessly walks the line between vibrancy and elegance approachable enough for the curious beginner, yet layered enough to satisfy the seasoned aficionado.

Tasting Notes

Eye A beautiful copper-gold robe, luminous and clear, with warm amber highlights that hint at the time spent in oak. The colour speaks of youth and liveliness  bright, inviting, and full of promise.

Nose The first impression is generous and welcoming. Vanilla leads the way, supported by caramel and apricot, with a slightly bready character. Underneath, a vibrant citrus and pear note emerges a signature of the fresh Fins Bois terroir. Hints of fresh wood and spice add subtle depth and complexity, rounding out an aromatic profile that is both expressive and refined.

Mouth On the palate, vanilla and caramel return alongside citrus, fresh pears, and apples. The texture is smooth and well-rounded, with a moderate body that makes it wonderfully versatile. The taste is subtle and fruity, with a long and fresh finish a lingering warmth of vanilla and light spice that invites the next sip.
