Bache-Gabrielsen La Coupe 1905: 120 Years of Audacity, One Extraordinary Bottle
Some cognacs are made to be drunk. A few are made to be remembered.
In 2025, Maison Bache-Gabrielsen celebrated a milestone that very few family houses in the world of spirits ever reach: 120 years of uninterrupted passion, savoir-faire, and bold pioneering spirit. To mark this exceptional anniversary, the house created two cognacs unlike anything it had ever released. One of them is La Coupe 1905: a tribute to time itself, to the French oak that shaped it, and to the generations of a family who dared to dream big on the banks of the Charente.
Conceived as a homage to the founding year of the Maison in 1905, La Coupe is a unique blend of Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie, including one exceptional century-old eau-de-vie. A spirit that lived through wars, prohibitions, and the passage of an entire century quietly maturing in French oak, waiting for this precise moment to be revealed.
Edited in exactly 1,905 numbered bottles a direct wink to the year of the Maison's founding La Coupe stands as a symbolic creation, embodying the elegance of the long term. This is not simply a cognac. It is a living archive.
The Story Behind the Name
The name "La Coupe" The Cup in English evokes the cross-section of a French oak trunk, that iconic timber within which Bache-Gabrielsen's finest eaux-de-vie have rested for decades. The bottle's design itself is inspired by this image of wood, calling to mind the famous French oak in which eaux-de-vie are aged for decades.
And the packaging? Each of the 1,905 bottles is individually numbered and wrapped in packaging inspired by the pharmaceutical dispensaries of the early 20th century a knowing nod to the legendary story of founder Thomas Bache-Gabrielsen, who during the Norwegian Prohibition, sold his cognacs as a cure for all ailments in pharmacies. A century later, history wraps itself around every bottle.
A Blend Born From a Century of Patience
La Coupe is an assembly of Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie, including an exceptional century-old spirit that witnessed war and an entire generation of history. It was blended under the meticulous eye of Cellar Master Jean-Philippe Bergier, who has been the guardian of Bache-Gabrielsen's aromatic identity since 1989. In a world of instant gratification, this is what radical patience looks like.
Tasting Notes
Eye
Deep, warm amber with mahogany glints the colour of aged French oak soaked in a century of Charentais sunlight. The robe is dense, rich and luminous, moving slowly along the walls of the glass with the gravitas of decades. Every visual cue speaks of extraordinary age and depth.
Nose
The nose opens on floral and fruity notes, then evolves towards aromas of toasted hazelnuts. There is an initial lightness and elegance that belies the cognac's immense age dried flowers, candied citrus peel, and a whisper of rancio, that complex, sought-after quality that only comes from truly long ageing in oak. As the glass breathes, deeper, more contemplative notes emerge: beeswax, old leather, antique wood, and a delicate wisp of dried tobacco. This is a nose that rewards patience, revealing new layers with every return.
Mouth
The palate is spiced with accents of chocolate and coffee, and the finish is soft, velvety and richly aromatic the kind that makes you want to sit back, settle in, and savour. The texture is extraordinarily silky, with a full-bodied warmth that coats the palate without ever overwhelming it. Dark cocoa, roasted coffee, candied walnut and a long echo of dried fruits linger well beyond the final sip, leaving an impression of profound elegance and rare completeness. A finish measured not in seconds, but in memory.
A Collector's Treasure
This is a cognac for those who understand that rarity is not manufactured: it is earned, one year at a time. La Coupe 1905 is addressed to passionate collectors, curious connoisseurs, those seeking a gift with genuine historical weight, and anyone who believes a glass of exceptional cognac can say more than any words could.
