Bache-Gabrielsen Réserve Sérénité: When Time Becomes an Art Form
There is a state of mind that only comes with true excellence. The French call it sérénité.
A name is never chosen by accident in the world of fine cognac. When Maison Bache-Gabrielsen chose "Sérénité" serenity as the name for what is arguably the most elevated expression in its standard collection, it was making a promise. A promise that from the very first moment this cognac touches the glass, a profound sense of calm, completeness and satisfaction would follow. A promise that has been faithfully kept, bottle after bottle, decade after decade.
The name Sérénité was chosen by Bache-Gabrielsen to reflect the peaceful mood that this unique cognac will introduce you to. And it does precisely that with a grace and naturalness that only the most patient and masterfully assembled cognacs are capable of.
This is, by every measure, a cognac of exceptional standing. It was awarded a Double Gold Medal and the title of Best Extra-Aged Cognac at the 2016 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, while also earning an Outstanding quality distinction from the IWSC in London. Christian Bache-Gabrielsen himself father of the current director counts it as his personal favourite. Few endorsements carry more weight than that.
Pure Grande Champagne, Half a Century in Oak
The Réserve Sérénité draws its soul entirely from the Grande Champagne cru, the most prestigious terroir in the entire Cognac appellation, celebrated worldwide for the finesse, longevity and incomparable rancio character of its eaux-de-vie.
Sérénité is a blend of eaux-de-vie containing 85% Ugni Blanc and 15% of the increasingly rare Folle Blanche varietal a grape variety that brings extraordinary floral delicacy and aromatic finesse to the final blend, and one that very few cognac houses still work with today. The eaux-de-vie have aged for between 20 and 60 years in traditional Limousin oak casks, giving an average age of approximately 30 years, placing this cognac firmly in the realm of Extra, the highest official age category in the cognac classification system.
Under the expert eye of Cellar Master Jean-Philippe Bergier, these rare and patient spirits are assembled with the precision and care that only 30 years of intimate knowledge of the house's stocks can provide.
Tasting Notes
Eye
A deep, warm golden amber tending towards mahogany, radiant and dense in the glass. The robe is richly oily, with slow, generous tears that trace their way down the sides a visual language that tells you everything you need to know before the first sip. This is a cognac that has absorbed decades of French oak and transformed them into pure, liquid light.
Nose
The nose is surprisingly fresh for a cognac of this age, with a bright and floral bouquet with an essence of rose, balanced by earthy aromas and ripe fruit. It is precisely this paradox the youthful vitality preserved within such a mature spirit that makes Sérénité so captivating. An elegant touch of mocha and orange marmalade adds warmth and depth, while the Folle Blanche component weaves a delicate thread of white flowers and citrus blossom throughout. Given time in the glass, subtle whispers of old beeswax, dried rose petal and fine rancio emerge the unmistakable signature of Grande Champagne at its most evolved and complete.
Mouth
Ripe red apple, raspberry and pear perfume the palate with an almost ethereal freshness. After a few sips, rounded notes of vanilla and buttery pastry appear, followed by an elegant mix of nuts and wood, cashew, walnut and sandalwood persisting on the palate. The texture is extraordinarily silky and full-bodied, with a mouthfeel that is at once enveloping and precise. Round and velvety, with notes of coffee, vanilla and flowers, the palate delivers layer after layer of complexity without ever becoming heavy or demanding. The finish is long, spiced and richly aromatic, a gentle warmth of Grande Champagne terroir that fades slowly, leaving a lasting impression of absolute serenity.
A Bottle Worthy of the Liquid Within
A sleek and slender bottle houses this award-winning cognac, understated, elegant and humble. The design is clean and calm, leaving you with a sensation of serenity the moment the stunning silver stopper is opened. The Scandinavian minimalism of the Maison's aesthetic sensibility has never felt more appropriate here, the bottle steps aside so the cognac can speak for itself. Presented in a beautiful gift box, it is, as independent reviewers consistently note, one of the finest gifts a lover of fine cognac could ever receive.
