Bache-Gabrielsen Millésime 2011 Petite Champagne: The Year the Sun Never Stopped Shining

Some years leave a mark on the vine that no winemaker, no cellar master, and no amount of technical expertise could have engineered. 2011 was one of those years.

In the world of vintage cognac, the concept of a millésime a single-vintage spirit that captures an entire year's climate, geology and human craft in a single cask is one of the most intimate and irreproducible forms that the distiller's art can take. No blending, no averaging, no correction. Just one year, one cask, one truth.

And the truth of 2011 is remarkable. The year 2011 proved to be the hottest year in France since meteorological records began, a century ago. One of its defining characteristics was an exceptionally mild and very dry spring and autumn. The months of April and October were the hottest ever recorded, with April exceeding the average by over 4.2°C. The vines, pushed to their fullest potential by this extraordinary heat, yielded grapes of exceptional concentration, aromatic intensity and natural sugar. The hot and dry weather created this fabulous Petite Champagne 2011 vintage.

Drawn from a single Limousin oak cask barrel reference F-IV-28 and limited to just 708 numbered bottles, this millésime is not simply a cognac to drink. It is a cognac to hold, to study, and ultimately to remember.

A Single Cask. A Single Story.

The Petite Champagne cru sits just south of the Grande Champagne, sharing much of its chalky subsoil but producing eaux-de-vie of a distinctly different character: lighter on their feet, more immediately floral and fruity, with an elegance that reveals itself earlier in the ageing process. In an exceptional vintage year like 2011, that natural floral expressiveness is amplified into something truly striking.

Aged for 11 years in a single Limousin oak cask from 100% Ugni Blanc grapes, this vintage was bottled at a natural cask strength of 42.3% ABV, with no colour added, a mark of absolute transparency and confidence in the quality of the raw spirit. Every nuance you find in the glass is entirely the product of time, terroir and one exceptional solar year.

The house recommends warming the glass in the palm of your hand until the cognac reaches its ideal tasting temperature of 25°C (77°F), allowing its full aromatic complexity to open gradually and reveal itself in stages.

Tasting Notes

Eye

A brilliant, luminous golden straw lighter and more translucent than you might expect from 11 years of oak contact, a reflection of the Petite Champagne terroir's natural tendency towards elegance and delicacy rather than power. The robe shimmers with flashes of pale amber, alive and expressive, with a fine, steady coat along the glass that signals both freshness and structure.

Nose

The nose is arrestingly precise and instantly distinctive. Intense notes of green almonds and orgeat lead the way, laced with silky ginger: an aromatic profile that is at once exotic and deeply rooted in the terroir of the Petite Champagne. There is a cool, almost mineral freshness beneath, reminiscent of morning air over chalk soils, which gives the whole bouquet a rare sense of vibrancy and lift. As the glass breathes, delicate floral notes emerge  white blossom, dried citrus peel and a whisper of fresh almond pastry  building a nose of exceptional transparency and purity. This is not a nose that shouts. It is a nose that whispers, and rewards patience.

Mouth

A beautiful bitterness of pomelo and bitter orange dominates the palate with a structure that is straight and precise, making the whole tasting experience deeply delightful. The texture is lean and focused, with a mineral backbone that gives it remarkable definition and persistence. The bitterness is not harsh but rather energising the kind that makes you reach for the next sip immediately. Mid-palate, the orgeat and almond notes from the nose resurface in a rounder, warmer form, softened by the years in oak, before giving way to a finish of clean, spiced citrus warmth that lingers with quiet elegance. A finish that is long, fresh and utterly true to the vintage that created it.

Why This Millésime Matters

Vintage cognacs of this specificity single cask, single year, numbered, from a named terroir occupy a very particular space in the world of fine spirits. They are not made for immediate gratification. They are made for collectors who understand that rarity is not a marketing tool but a simple consequence of honesty: one barrel, one year, finite bottles, no repeat.

When the 708 bottles of this 2011 Petite Champagne are gone, they are gone. The year cannot be recreated. The barrel cannot be refilled. The 4.2°C excess heat of that April morning in the Charente will never come again in quite the same way.

This is the fundamental promise and the fundamental privilege of a true millésime.

Perfect For

Neat, warmed in the palm of the hand to 25°C  the house's own recommendation to unlock every aromatic layer. Pairing: citrus-forward desserts, light almond pastries, a fresh goat's cheese, or simply enjoyed as a contemplative after-dinner pour. The collector's cellar: a numbered, single cask limited edition from a historically exceptional vintage year. A truly singular gift for someone who has tasted everything and is ready for something genuinely irreplaceable
