Bache-Gabrielsen 22 Years Old Millésime 1999: The Last Vintage of the 20th Century

Some years are defined by what they produced. Others by what they survived.

1999 was both. The final vintage year of the twentieth century arrived not with the gentle farewell one might have hoped for, but with a series of blows that nature delivered with startling force. 1999 was a tough year for Mother Nature: the Erika tanker was wrecked off the coast of Brittany, and Storm Lothar raged through Western Europe. The Charente vineyards, battered by harsh weather conditions throughout the year, yielded what would become one of the smallest cognac productions of the century, and therefore one of the rarest.

Scarcity born from adversity is one of the most powerful forces in the world of vintage spirits. The vines that fought through that turbulent year produced something intensely concentrated, deeply characterful and utterly singular. And from a single cask barrel reference F-IV-24. Jean-Philippe Bergier and the house of Bache-Gabrielsen preserved that character for 22 full years before releasing it, non-chill-filtered and at full natural cask strength, to those willing to seek it out.

What remains is the last great cognac of the twentieth century. And there will never be another.

A Terroir Under Pressure, A Cask That Held Its Ground

Exclusively made from eau-de-vie selected from the Grande Champagne premier cru in the vintage year of 1999, this fine cognac spent a staggering 22 years ageing in Limousin oak casks. The Grande Champagne terroir, the most celebrated cru in the entire Cognac appellation, defined by its deep chalky subsoil and remarkable capacity for long ageing absorbed every challenge that year threw at it and responded with a spirit of extraordinary density and aromatic power.

Bottled in May 2022, this single cask expression is presented at a natural ABV of 46.9%, with no artificial colour added and non-chill-filtered, the most honest and transparent way to present a vintage cognac. Nothing has been removed, corrected or adjusted. What you find in the bottle is precisely what lived inside that barrel for over two decades.

Tasting Notes

Eye

A deep, intense amber with warm russet and copper highlights richer and darker than you might expect from 22 years in oak, a direct reflection of the powerful, concentrated character that the difficult 1999 harvest produced. The robe coats the glass with slow, substantial tears, each one carrying the density and warmth of the Grande Champagne terroir and the full natural strength of an unfiltered, undiluted spirit. This is a cognac that makes no apologies for its presence.

Nose

On the nose, spices lead the way, accompanied by a distinctly evocative "cigar box" quality and cloves. There is an immediate sense of authority and depth, this is not a nose that whispers, it speaks with quiet confidence and remarkable clarity. The cigar box note: dry, slightly tannic, beautifully aromatic is a hallmark of well-aged Grande Champagne at its most serious and contemplative. As the glass opens, the spices settle into deeper layers of complexity, revealing traces of dried flowers, dark leather, old polished wood and a gentle thread of rancio that confirms the exceptional quality of the terroir and the care of the ageing. A nose that demands attention and rewards it generously.

Mouth

On the palate, Brazilian coffee, gingerbread and dark chocolate arrive with greedy intensity. The texture at 46.9% is full, expansive and warming, coating every surface of the palate with a richness that never tips into heaviness. The dark chocolate note is precise and deeply satisfying, offset by the gentle sweetness of the gingerbread and the roasted bitterness of the coffee. This is a palate built for slow, deliberate sipping one that reveals new facets with each pass, opening and expanding as the spirit breathes in the glass. The finish is long, structured and persistent, with the spice and coffee notes lingering through a warm, dry, tobacco-tinged resonance that fades with the quiet authority of a truly great aged cognac. A finale worthy of the final vintage of a century.

Why This Millésime Stands Apart

Within the Bache-Gabrielsen Years in Cask vintage collection, the 1999 occupies a uniquely compelling position. It is not simply rare by the standards of fine cognac it is rare by the standards of history. The combination of a catastrophically small harvest, a single cask provenance, 22 years of patient ageing, non-chill-filtration at natural strength and the irrefutable symbolism of being the last vintage of the 20th century creates a bottle that is, quite literally, irreplaceable.

As such a unique and complex aromatic expression, it is best enjoyed without distractions sipped slowly from a tulip glass, allowing the patchwork of aromas to evolve in harmony throughout the tasting.

Perfect For

Neat, at room temperature, in a tulip glass allow several minutes for the aromas to fully open at natural cask strength. Pairing: dark 70%+ chocolate, espresso, gingerbread, aged pecorino or a fine Havana cigar. The serious collector: last vintage of the century, single cask, non-chill-filtered, naturally coloured, numbered and limited. A once-in-a-lifetime gift: for a 1999 birth year, a significant anniversary, or someone who truly appreciates the unrepeatable
