Bache-Gabrielsen 21 Years Old Millésime 2001: The First Vintage of a New Century

2001. A year that began on a Monday, as if the world itself was clocking in for something new.

The turn of a millennium carries a particular weight in the human imagination. It marks the end of one chapter and the opening of another a collective exhale, a shared sense that something fundamental has shifted. In the cellars of Cognac, that shift translated into something tangible, singular, and deeply aromatic. The year 2001 marked the dawn of the new millennium and delivered an excellent vintage a cognac of rich and complex aromas.

The Bache-Gabrielsen Millésime 2001, Aged 21 Years is part of the house's Years in Cask vintage collection a series dedicated to the idea that a single year's climate, a single terroir and a single cask can tell a story that no blend, however masterfully assembled, ever could. This is cognac at its most intimate, honest and irreproducible. Twenty-one years in Limousin oak, patiently watched over, never rushed.

The Year the Vines Delivered

The year 2001 opened a transformative phase for cognac enthusiasts. Nature furnished the vineyards with a climatic symphony: a brisk, rain-soaked winter that gave way to a blistering summer, punctuated by cool nocturnal temperatures. This dramatic swing between extremes the cold nights slowing ripening, the scorching days concentrating sugars and aromas created exactly the kind of tension that produces truly great eaux-de-vie. These conditions allowed the grapes to mature impeccably, harnessing the right balance of rich, intricate aromas while preserving their vital acidity.

The result, after more than two decades in oak, is a cognac that carries the memory of that pivotal year in every sip complete, resolved, beautifully settled by time.

A Vintage That Has Only Grown Richer

What makes a 21-year-old millésime so compelling is the specific moment in a cognac's life it represents. Twenty-one years is long enough for the raw energy of youth to have fully dissolved into something structured and complex, yet short enough for fruit and vitality to remain very much present. The Limousin oak has had time to fully integrate, lending warmth, spice and depth without ever obscuring the character of the vintage beneath.

The house recommends warming the glass in the palm of your hand until the cognac reaches its optimal tasting temperature of 25°C (77°F), allowing the full aromatic spectrum to reveal itself progressively and generously.

Tasting Notes

Eye

A warm, inviting amber with golden copper highlights, deeper and richer than the 11-year-old Millésime 2011 yet still animated by an inner luminosity that speaks of vitality preserved through careful cellaring. The robe moves slowly and deliberately along the glass, leaving generous, unhurried tears a clear sign of the concentration and texture built up across two decades in oak.

Nose

The nose opens on notes of spices, hazelnuts and bay leavesan aromatic signature that is at once warm and herbaceous, elegant and quietly complex. There is a beautiful interplay between the toasted richness of the hazelnut and the fresh, almost savoury edge of the bay leaf, which gives this millésime a distinctly savoury and intellectually engaging character. As the glass breathes, deeper notes of dried fruit, subtle vanilla and a whisper of polished oak emerge, layering the bouquet with quiet confidence. These 21 years of ageing have brought a deep aromatic richness that unfolds slowly and generously, rewarding patience with every new wave.

Mouth

On the palate, notes of freshly roasted coffee beans make an immediate and memorable impression, accompanied by notes of nuts. Spicy notes underline a supple finish of hazelnuts and bay leaves, with an explosion of aromas on the palate where roasted coffee beans accompany the notes of nuts. The texture is full-bodied and deeply satisfying, with a structure that balances warmth and freshness in equal measure. The coffee note precise, clean, not bitter is the defining personality of this vintage, cutting through the richness with a clarity that keeps the whole tasting experience focused and lively. The finish is long, spiced and persistent, fading gently through waves of hazelnut, toasted wood and warm aromatic complexity.

Perfect For

Neat at 25°C, held briefly in the palm to awaken its full aromatic complexity the house's own recommendation.
